Going the Extra Mile to nourish futures.
The Extra Mile Program is a home-delivery food distribution model designed to reduce transportation challenges and eliminate stigma for food-insecure children and their families. Built with a human-centered approach, each distribution is tailored to meet family needs and prioritizes fresh, nutritious food whenever possible.
This innovative program was recognized in 2023 with an Innovation Lab Award in partnership with Save the Children and Baylor University for its potential to reach families with children in rural communities.
How the Program Works
Mountaineer Food Bank partners with DoorDash, when available, to deliver food directly to families at a discounted rate—helping us truly go the extra mile. In areas where DoorDash service is not available, we collaborate with county Boards of Education to secure trained staff to serve as delivery drivers.
Once a delivery method is determined, Mountaineer Food Bank and the county Board of Education identify one to three centralized pick-up locations, typically schools. At these sites, food boxes are packed and prepared for delivery. Drivers then deliver food to families within a 10-mile radius of each location, ensuring timely and efficient service.
Reaching Families Where They Are
By delivering food directly to homes, the Extra Mile Program removes common barriers to access while preserving dignity and convenience for families. The result is a more effective, compassionate way to nourish children and support families—especially in rural communities where resources may be limited.
